Saturday
morning markets in many cities and
towns are a treat for Americans used
to shopping only in stores. In Bratislava,
visit the Central Market Hall
(Trznica at Namestie
SNP) to see colorful stands of
fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s
also a great place to have a snack
or quick meal of traditional Slovak
culinary specialties, such as Gypsy’s
roast meat with loksa (potato-dough
patties), sausages, and sour
cucumbers, along with good wine.

Most shops are open 9am to 6pm weekdays,
Saturdays until noon. Department stores
are generally open until 4pm on Saturdays.
Shopping malls, primarily located
in the largest cities (Bratislava,
Kosice) are open 10 am – 9pm
every day of the week.

Wine/liquor/liqueur
Slovakia produces fine wines,
such as Tokay, and liqueurs, such
as Demanovka, Medovica and plum
brandy. You can purchase wine/liqueurs
directly from producers if you visit
vineyards, such as those on the Small
Carpathian Wine Route or in shops.

Cut
crystal glasses, vases, bowls
Before the breakup of Czechoslovakia,
much of what was marketed as Bohemian
crystal was made in Slovakia. Available
in gift shops in Bratislava and all
around the country, this crystal is
marketed under the names Slovglass
or LR.
If you’d like to visit
the factory and watch glass being
blown and etched by hand,
the Slovglass factory is in Poltar,
in South Central Slovakia, about 10
miles northwest of Rimavska Sobota
and 10 miles northeast of Lucenec.
The factory store sells handmade
items at discounted prices.
Note: Slovglass
also produces machine-made glass,
but the handmade product is what you
want.
